Tour of the Haymes Residence

  • Location will be given to ticket holders (map)

On April 19 at 5:30 Modern Richmond will tour the Haymes Residence, just off Cherokee Road, where a 1,565 square-foot one-story addition expands a 1,262 square-foot two-story farmhouse. The owners moved from the San Francisco Bay area to Richmond to be closer to family as they enjoy retirement.

The owners desired a larger house with a fresh mid-century modern vibe. Originally a cramped 2 bed / 2.5 bath house, the residence now has an L-shaped addition with a new open family room, kitchen, dining, mudroom and two-car garage that wrap around the original house. The living, dining and kitchen spaces feature tall ceilings with a mid-century-inspired cathedral ceiling.

A large new owners’ suite has sloping ceilings that rise from 10’-0” to 12’-0” tall. The primary bedroom has tranquil views through an 8'-0” wide by 10’-6” tall window to a new mossy zen garden defined by concrete retaining walls. The primary bathroom features a double vanity, a generous walk-in shower, and freestanding soaking tub with views to the sky through a picture window above. A large pass-through closet provides secondary access to the bathroom.

The exterior incorporates large black-framed glass windows, exposed wood beams, and smooth plank siding painted white. The clients wanted a gabled-roof house with mid-century modern styling, using deep overhangs and cantilevered exposed beams.

Exterior spaces include a broad covered veranda with steps down to an L-shaped pool terrace with areas for grilling, lounging and dining. The 14’ x 32’ shallow volleyball pool is just out from the covered veranda. A large grassy yard beyond is surrounded by mature and newly planted trees.

Speakers at the event will include the architect Chris Snowden, interior designer Nicole Rutledge, and general contractor Jordan Hutchins of Spruce Construction.

At the owner's request, the location address will only be given to ticket holders.
