Tour of McKinnon and Harris

  • McKinnon and Harris 1722 Arlington Road Richmond, VA, 23230 United States (map)

On Thursday May 18th, Modern Richmond's tour of McKinnon and Harris, at 1722 Arlington Road, will introduce attendees to the showroom and workshop of an international company that designs and produces elegant, handcrafted, outdoor furnishings. The company was founded three decades ago by siblings Anne Harris Massie and William McKinnon Massie, whose first designs were inspired by traditional English garden furniture. The company’s slogan, Sublimis, Virtus, Sempiterna - Permanence, Beauty, the Eternal – underscores McKinnon and Harris’ objective to create timeless, beautifully crafted furnishings. At the same time, the company’s work is ground-breaking. For example, they were the first to introduce outdoor sectional seating to the market.

Their headquarters, an adaptive reuse of a 1940s warehouse, designed by 3North and built by Conquest Moncure & Dunn, is located just west of Arthur Ashe Boulevard and south of I-95. The project, completed in 2019, is a showcase of McKinnon and Harris' evolving furniture lines and a vivid expression of their architects’ skillful ability to “evoke the qualities of a sophisticated garden setting and provide a deferential backdrop to the beauty of the McKinnon and Harris furniture. The showroom provides a timeless gallery setting which is at once quiet, strong, graceful and self-assured.”

As part of the tour, small groups will be escorted into the fabrication workshop to see the company’s state of the art production facilities.

Remarks during the tour will be provided by representatives from McKinnon and Harris and 3North.

Parking will be available on street and on site.
