Join us for a special opportunity to see rare archival materials related to Modern design in Richmond! After meeting at the Library’s ground floor check-in desk, Elizabeth Klaczynski, Education and Programs Specialist, will introduce us to the library at its 200th Anniversary exhibit, which includes two original models by the late architect Haigh Jamgochian.
Dale Neighbors, Visual Studies Collection Coordinator, will escort us to Special Collections where he’ll share architectural drawings and ephemera from the archives. Among other treasures, we’ll get to see sketches and measured drawings of the “Moon House” Jamgochian designed for Howard Hughes (aka Mad Man Dapper Dan), Charles Gillette’s landscape design for Reynolds Metals Headquarters (now Altria Headquarters), and drawings and correspondence related to the design of the Higgins Medical Office, the round ornamental block building that now houses the offices of Ellwood-Thompson’s grocery.
These archived materials are only seen by special appointment. The monumental building that houses the state library and archives was designed by SOM in 1997 with Glave Newman Anderson as the architect of record.
Free public parking is available under the building. Tickets are $10 each. Due to space limitations there are very limited tickets available for this event.
