David Lohmeier, a Virginia-based architect who has designed a wide range of contemporary homes throughout the state, and Beau Richards, a young local designer/builder with an affinity for minimalism and modern design, built the Richards’ home on Hillwood Road in 2015. 309 Hillwood provided both with a rare opportunity to build a modern home that was tailored specifically to the neighborhood’s dramatic elevation changes and tall poplar trees.
Purposefully designed from the inside out and done in typical Scandinavian styling, the home regularly reminds the occupants to be observant of the surrounding natural environment via its oversized casement windows, minimal trim details, and simple color palette. Like many of the homes designed by Richards, there is a strong sense of protecting and showcasing authenticity. Details like exposed rough-sawn cedar beams, white oak live-edge, the naturally-occurring patina of corten steel and red cedar, and artwork specifically painted for the home by Richards’ wife, are all carefully placed throughout. Specific building materials like American Clay and Italian marble, and the use of matte finishes continue the focus on natural textures and creating a sense of balance and tranquility. The great room and adjacent master suite curl into one another and give a sense of security and privacy against the surrounding trees. This home carefully blends Beau’s childhood in the woods with that of his wife’s, a city girl from northern California.
